The church is actually the body of believers, not a building. If you had said you were going to church to an early Christian they would not understand what you were saying. The church is who we are not where we go. Ephesians 1:22–23, Eph. 2:21-22 Jesus did not die for a building, did He? Acts 20:28 Jesus said where two or three gather in His name He is among them. Matthew 18:20 This is the church. The original word used for our English translation “church” is ekklesia.

The downside of viewing the church as a building is we tend to lose touch with Christ when we are not there. The upside of understanding we are the church is related to an old saying. “Wherever you go you take yourself with you” If Christ is in you then you are more apt to be kind and loving to people like you are when you go to the building you go to on Sunday.

The church is one body. Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12:13 Jesus prayed for his church to be one. John 17:20 – 21. To accept and work towards this unity is obedience to Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is the head of the church. Ephesians 1:22, Ephesians 5:23, 1 Corinthians 11:3, Colossians 1:18, Colossians 2:10
