Prop. 8 trial frames legal debate on marital rights. But what about we Christians?

Prop 8 has brought my attention back to the subject of marriage. As most of us know, America was founded on Christian principles. We are not here to argue that some of the founding fathers were Deists. I will grant you that argument. However, they still used the Bible as their foundation even though some of them just could not accept Christ as the only way.

Today the country is a long, long way from the founders. The courts decide marriage and divorce issues as a function of the state versus the church. (See also Covenant Marriage) What are we as Christians to do about it? Besides standing firm on our principles, voting and talking to our friends about it, there is little else we can do. Christians have thrived in non Christian countries with pagan governments for 2 thousand years. There is no need to get upset if the government finally rules that homosexuals can marry or if humans can marry their pets as Bill O’Reilly likes to point out.  Take it to whatever extreme you want.

The bottom line is Christians must get accustomed to the old ways again. We must learn to be “salt and light” in a dark decaying world. A generic Christianity has taken the place of Biblical Christianity. How many people so called Christians approve of the homosexual marriage issue? Plenty! Some entire denominations deny the Biblical view of this particular subject.

However, Biblical Christians know better. One word of caution. Do not suppose that homosexuality is any more damning of a sin than anything else that separates us from God. It troubles me greatly to see people that hate homosexuals. That particular sin is no worse than cheating on your wife, bearing false witness etc.  Whoever cannot see their own sin is not living according to the Scriptures. Many of us need this humbling reminder, including myself.

My advice is to teach your children the best you can to reject sin. Remind them of their own shortcomings and teach them to protest without hate.

1 Corinthians 6:8-10 (New International Version)

8 Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers.
9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders or thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

What is the basic difference between the world religions and true Christianity?
